SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.

Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.

The Americas Division Compliance Department is responsible for promoting a culture of compliance and ensuring that SMBC adheres to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies. We work to identify, assess, and mitigate compliance risks and provide guidance and effective second line challenges to business units across the firm and Group Companies.  
 

We are currently hiring for the following areas: 

Financial Crime Compliance 

The Financial Crime Compliance (“FCC”) team oversees and manages the Anti-Money Laundering/Counter-Terrorism Financing (“AML/CTF”), Sanctions, Anti-Bribery and Corruption (“ABC”), and Anti-Fraud programs across the Americas Division. The team is comprised of seasoned professionals dedicated to mitigating risk consistently within and across the region, its business lines, and its support functions.  

Corporate Compliance 

The Corporate Compliance (“CC”) program consists of Advisory, Ethics Office, Surveillance, Control Room and Conflicts of Interest, Risk Assessment, Regulatory Change Management, Monitoring and Testing, and Compliance Issue Management. Team members design and implement solutions to identify and mitigate risks, develop compliance programs for existing and new regulations, and oversee risk-based compliance reviews. 

Central Compliance 

Central Compliance serves to integrate and standardize key areas of FCC and Corporate Compliance.  The Central Compliance function includes Program Governance, inclusive of Reporting, Complaints, Governance, Policies, and Training; Privacy Office; and Chief Administrative Office.

How Our Program Works

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.

This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes: 

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2026 or May 2027; excellent academic record
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
  • Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications

 

SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process. Hybrid work may not be permitted for certain roles, including, for example, certain FINRA-registered roles for which in-office attendance for the entire workweek is required.
