SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.
Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.
Our Summer Intern Program is a pipeline to our full-time Analyst Program.

Debt Capital Markets
The Debt Capital Markets group is responsible for delivering the full spectrum of debt financing solutions and execution for the bank’s investment grade clients. DCM advises on structure, price, and strategy for primary market debt offerings, often part of broader multi-product pitches. Summer Interns may gain exposure to conversations between issuers and fixed income investors, hybrid capital structuring advisory, advising on debt portfolio optimization via liability management exercises, and deal execution, among other fixed income financing solutions.

High Yield Capital Markets Group
The High Yield Capital Markets group is responsible for providing capital markets advisory for non-investment grade rated corporations and sponsor portfolio companies. The group advises on capital structure, new issue pricing, and syndication strategies for new debt offerings. High Yield Capital Markets also provides “real-time” market insight by leveraging the High Yield Sales & Trading team’s direct feedback from investors.

Securitized Products
- The Securitized Products Group (SPG) is responsible for the origination, structuring, and execution of structured finance products including Term ABS, ABCP/ABL, and CLOs, among others. As a part of SPG, Summer Interns will help the team advise on structural execution alternatives and strategies, provide market and pricing updates to new and existing clients, and drive broader cross-sell opportunities for the Bank.

Loan Capital Markets
- The Loan Capital Markets Department is responsible for the structuring, underwriting, execution and distribution of syndicated loan transactions across all industry and origination groups at SMBC. LCM professionals work with and advise the front office marketing (origination) units in order to successfully pitch corporate and financial sponsor clients in a combined effort to win lead-mandates for syndicated loan facilities. Proposals to prospective clients usually involve coordination and partnership with other SMBC and Nikko (our Securities unit) product groups (Debt Capital Markets, FX, Derivatives Marketing and so on) in order to provide comprehensive, multiproduct financing solutions to our clients. Once a lead mandate for a syndicated loan is received, the LCM team is responsible for execution and distribution of loans to both banks and institutional investors.

Leveraged Finance
- SMBC’s Leveraged Finance Group is a well-established and rapidly growing platform in the US which will offer firsthand experience into the private equity space. The group’s primary mission is to originate, structure, and execute leveraged financing solutions to support financial sponsor activity. Team members work to provide cash flow and asset-based financing solutions to support leveraged buyouts (LBO) and other merger & acquisition (M&A) transactions recapitalizations, refinancing, add-on acquisitions, and other financing events for private equity backed companies. Candidates will contribute meaningfully to the transaction process within a variety of different industries including diversified industrials, healthcare, consumer and retail, technology, food and beverage, and other end markets. Summer Interns will develop a core skillset of credit and capital markets analysis with responsibilities including fundamental due diligence, financial statement analysis, cash flow projection modeling, preparation of pitch materials, and other activities to support transaction execution.

Capital Solutions Group
- The Capital Solutions Group (CSG) at SMBC focuses on balance sheet optimization, leveraging innovative strategies to enhance returns and capital efficiency amidst evolving regulatory and market conditions. CSG deploys a range of solutions tailored to bank balance sheet needs, including synthetic risk transfers, securitizations, transfer of assets, and portfolio back leverage. As part of CSG, Summer Interns will provide support to senior CSG team members by collaborating with SMBC’s lending teams, risk management, and leadership to drive strategic firm initiatives.

How Our Program Works
Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.
This 10-week program commences in June and includes:
- Orientation
- Training with on-the-desk experience
- Senior Speaker Series
- Japanese cultural activities
- Social networking activities
- Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
- Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC
The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028; excellent academic record
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
- Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
- Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
- Intellectual curiosity
- Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
- Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
- Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process.
