What is the Opportunity?

SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas & support a range of deals with our clients

Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research & participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry

Our Summer Intern Program is pipeline to our full-time Analyst Program

Location: New York

Anticipated Salary: $54.95/hour

What is the Opportunity?

We’re seeking summer interns to join our Global Markets Sales & Trading business in the Americas. Interns will be exposed to all elements of the markets business, including transaction pricing & execution; the interactions between sales, trading & institutional clients; as well as the fundamentals of secondary trading & market analysis. Interns will gain an understanding of a variety of fixed-income products, risks metrics, the buy-side client landscape & the skills required to succeed in the field. Interns will assist the desks in all aspects of trade execution, structuring & pricing; client services & sales presentations; & the day-to-day flow of a busy trading floor.

Participants in the 2026 Global Markets Sales & Trading Summer Intern Program will gain exposure to one or more of the following groups in our NY office:

Macro Rates Sales & Trading

The Macro Rates Sales & Trading team offers an expansive suite of derivative and cash interest rate products for SMBC’s institutional clients, including hedge funds, asset managers, insurers & real estate investors.

Credit Sales & Trading

The Credit Sales & Trading team offers a broad range of investment services and facilitates client transactions across investment-grade, high-yield, asset-backed, collateralized loan & emerging market fixed income products.

Risk Solutions 

The Risk Solutions team provides a wide array of interest rate & FX hedging products & services to SMBC’s corporate, sponsor & project finance clients in close partnership with banking & coverage teams.

Systematic Trading

The Systematic Trading Group is a cross-product electronic & quantitative trading team that develops and deploys a broad range of trading tools, systems & algorithms to enhance SMBC’s market-making, hedging & execution efficiency.

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who have completed their junior year

This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

• Orientation
• Training with on-the-desk experience
• Senior Speaker Series
• Japanese cultural activities
• Social networking activities
• Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
• Mentorship opportunity with both a junior & senior mentor at SMBC

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2026 - May 2027; excellent academic record
• Exceptional written & verbal communication skills with a specific ability to communicate concepts & ideas concisely and defend their validity
• Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
• Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
• Intellectual curiosity

SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process.
