SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.

Participants in our Summer Intern Program will work on a variety of projects including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and participating in client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.

Desk Description

We are currently hiring into the following Global Markets Americas Groups:

  • Credit Sales & Trading: The Credit Sales & Trading team offers a broad range of investment services and facilitates client transactions across investment-grade, high-yield, asset-backed, collateralized loan & emerging market fixed income products

  • Macro Rates Sales & Trading: The Macro Rates Sales & Trading team offers an expansive suite of derivative and cash interest rate products for SMBC’s institutional clients, including hedge funds, asset managers, insurers & real estate investors

  • Risk Solutions: The Risk Solutions team provides a wide array of interest rate & FX hedging products & services to SMBC’s corporate, sponsor & project finance clients in close partnership with banking & coverage teams

  • Systematic Trading: The Systematic Trading Group is a cross-product electronic & quantitative trading team that develops and deploys a broad range of trading tools, systems & algorithms to enhance SMBC’s market-making, hedging & execution efficiency

How Our Program Works

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.

This 10-week program commences in June and includes:

  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2027 or May 2028; excellent academic record
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
  • Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications

SMBC’s employees participate in a hybrid workforce model that provides employees with an opportunity to work from home, as well as, from an SMBC office. SMBC requires that employees live within a reasonable commuting distance of their office location. Prospective candidates will learn more about their specific hybrid work schedule during their interview process. Hybrid work may not be permitted for certain roles, including, for example, certain FINRA-registered roles for which in-office attendance for the entire workweek is required.
